ing skin. Late spring gave the freedom of bare feet in cool, fresh, green grass. Hot summer brought with it the spoiler - chiggers! Fall introduced the best season of the year: the air was invigorating, scented by burning leaves and filled with the sounds of football.
It was either the winter of 1924 or 1925 when the parsonage was quarantined because Mama had diptheria. Not until authorities removed the sign on the front door could we leave the house. Prior to that the house had to be fumigated, room by room. For years sister Frieda was reminded of the situation. She had attempted to bake bread which came out of the oven too soon, or the oven wasn’t hot enough. Anyway, Ingvald sealed all the cracks around the doors to each room being fumigated with bread dough. Somehow he managed not to be around for the horrendous job of removing the dry dough.
The death of Mama 29 Jun 1932 due to heart failure brought an end to the pleasant memories of a childhood in Decorah. Helen Johnson, a cousin from St. Olaf, IA, came as housekeeper for 2 years. She was cheerful, fair and firm. What a great asset she was to our father— greater then he realized at that time.
Our father remarried during the summer of 1934 to Elize (Torgrimson) Fjelde who was bridesmaid in his first marriage. The union was not a happy one for all concerned. Yet stoically our father continued as Pastor of Decorah Lutheran Church for 7 more years. The congregation was very tolerant of his shortcomings. However, being very faithful in his attempts to fulfill all pastoral duties was surely not one of them. Upon retirement he moved to Northfield, MN in 1941. He died 29 Jan 1955 in Muscatine, IA where my sister Ruth lived. Today, of his immediate family, Frieda, Roald, Nels and Ruth survive him.

(The following was taken from the History of Decorah Lutheran Church).
"Pastor Ole Glesne came to Decorah in 1916 from Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Aberdeen, SD for a ministry here that spanned the period from WWI to WWII. He retired in 1941. Born near Elkader, IA he was the youngest son of Ole and Helga Glesne. Ole Glesne Sr. emigrated to America in 1849 from Hallingdal in Norway and settled in northeastern IA. Ole Glesne Jr. graduated from St. Olaf College and the seminary of the United Norwegian Church. He married Hannah Boe, a sister of Lars Boe, who was the president of St. Olaf College for many years. Pastor and Mrs. Glesne had 5 sons and 3 daughters who are remembered by many people in Decorah.
When the Glesne family came to Decorah the congregation acquired its second parsonage at 721 Washington Street. Pastor and Mrs. Glesne were very effective in soliciting new members and the congregation grew from slightly over 600 to 940 by 1931. Then came the great Depression and Pastor Glesne asked that his salary be cut by $200 to $1500. When Mrs. Glesne died in the early thirties she was sorely missed by the congregation as well as by her family."
